Cinnamon is a classic cold-weather spice, and just the smell of it transports us back to blustery days by the fireside, anticipating whatever delectable pie or cookies were about to be pulled from the oven. Although you might not think coffee and cinnamon go together, cappuccinos and lattes are frequently served with a pinch of cinnamon sprinkled on top. Adding cinnamon to regular coffee is a simple way to (literally) spice up your morning cup of joe.

Good, old, trustworthy McCormick’s Cinnamon is made & packaged in the United States. It contains only Cinnamon. It is so wonderfully fresh you can smell & taste it. I use these as part of my alternative choices in flavoring my morning coffee instead of purchasing flavored coffee. I use my regular grind and when I desire a touch of a different flavor I break off a couple of sticks roughly 2″ each and put it on top of my coffee prior to brewing. Can add more or less according to taste. For the most part, they break easily enough. Was looking for a larger-sized container but this one will last me quite a while since I use other things such as extracts or nothing at all to add variety. 

How To Make Cinnamon Coffee:

Ingredients

  • Freshly ground coffee beans
  • Cinnamon
  • Cinnamon sticks (optional)
  • Whipped cream or steamed milk (optional)

Equipment

  • French press, pour-over, drip machine, or AeroPress
  • Filter (depending on brewing method)
  • Coffee cup or mug

1. Cinnamon And Ground Coffee Should Be Combined.

Measure out your ground coffee and mix in a pinch of ground cinnamon. We recommend beginning with a pinch of cinnamon. If it’s not strong enough, you can always add more later!

2. Brew as usual.

Fill your brewer halfway with the cinnamon-coffee mixture and brew as usual.

3. Garnish With Whipped Cream Or Cinnamon Sticks, If Desired.

Fill a mug halfway with coffee. You can top it with whipped cream, steamed milk, or cinnamon sticks if you want. Now it’s time to relax with a warm drink!

What Is The Appropriate Amount Of Cinnamon To Use?

Not too much, but not too little. We’re joking, but in the end, it all comes down to personal preference. We settled on 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for every 10 tablespoons of ground coffee after some trial and error. This isn’t set in stone, so feel free to tweak it to your liking. This is a good place to start if you’ve never made cinnamon coffee before.


What Type Of Coffee Should You Drink?

We know it sounds boring, but medium roast coffee is our favourite. Cinnamon is a strong flavour, and when we want cinnamon coffee, we want to taste the cinnamon up front and centre. A dark roast with a strong flavour can easily drown out the cinnamon.

We tried brewing dark roast cinnamon coffee and didn’t care for it. We even tried adding more cinnamon to balance out the richness of the dark roast, but it didn’t work. Instead, feeling like we were in a cinnamon-coffee arms race, we decided to stick to medium roast cinnamon coffee. This is our preference, but we don’t want you to give up trying. If you enjoy dark roasts, give it a try! It could be ideal for you.

Light roasts, like dark roasts, make an unusual combination with cinnamon. To our palates, the fruity flavours and high acidity that typically accompany a light roast don’t work well with cinnamon.


Which Method Of Brewing Should You Use?

The basic method for making cinnamon coffee is to use your usual method and simply add cinnamon to the coffee grounds. That’s all. There is nothing else that needs to be done for many brewing methods. The addition of cinnamon has no effect on the French press, pour-over with a paper filter, automatic drip, or Aeropress.

Pour-over with a permanent, fine metal filter is the only method we do not recommend for making cinnamon coffee. We had a difficult time getting the superfine ground cinnamon out of our metal filter. Ground cinnamon is extremely fine, even when compared to the finest ground coffee, and it easily clogs permanent filters.

Our French press filter did not have this issue, which we believe is due to the fineness of the mesh. If you don’t mind your next few batches of coffee having cinnamon overtones, it might be fine, but if you want to clean it completely, a fine metal pour-over cone might be difficult.

You might be wondering why we add the coffee to the grounds rather than the cup after the brew is finished. That’s a good question with a simple answer: we tried to make cinnamon coffee by adding cinnamon to the cup, and it was WAY too strong. The only thing we could taste was cinnamon, and it was not a pleasant experience.

So far, we’ve only discussed how adding cinnamon to your coffee grounds can result in cinnamon-infused coffee, but there are a few other things you can do to boost the cinnamon’s impact even more.

One of our favourite ways to boost the cinnamon flavour is to add a cinnamon stick as a garnish to the mug. Smell and taste are inextricably linked, and the waft of cinnamon aroma released by the cinnamon stick as you take a sip is delectable. It also looks cool.

We also like to add milk and a pinch of ground cinnamon to our mug for a faux-cappuccino effect.

Conclusion

Cinnamon coffee is delicious all year, but it is especially delicious during the cold winter months. Making cinnamon coffee requires no special equipment or gear, and it’s usually no more difficult than making a regular cup of coffee.
